The Destruction of Gastus IV commenced newly-crowned Emperor Valak's Great Campaign to rebuild the Empire and where the third Death Star was revealed to the galaxy.
Gastus IV possessed no military forces for its defense, allowing the Imperial Fleet to emerge from hyperspace and proceed immediately into firing range.
Several senior Republic officials including Luke Skywalker were present in the system aboard the luxury cruise liner Angry Rancor at the time of the attack. Imperial starfighters failed to capture the Rancor which fled the system stranding its commanders, Jack Raven and Rhea Zuri, on the planet.
Within minutes of arrival, Gastus IV was destroyed.
The Angry Rancor fled to nearby Caspia, where her passengers delivered the news of the atrocity and the new super-weapon to a shocked and horrified galaxy.
